Monograph Acquisitions: Weeding the Hayden Browsery

Weeding the Hayden Browsery

(Last updated by ASM 9/21/11)

  • Books remain on the Hayden Browsery for approximately 1 year.
  • In order to determine how long a book has been on the Browsery, refer to the “MIT libraries Received Date Stamp” on the verso of the title page.
  • If the book has been on the Browsery for 1 year or longer than the receipt date, pull the book and place it on your book truck for processing back at your desk.  (Pull as much as you think you will have time to fully process which is recommended to be no more than one side of a book truck at a time.)
  • When finished pulling books, bring the book truck back to your desk for processing.

NOTES:
-It is helpful to put the books in call number order on the truck since we bring them to circulation for pre-shelving or leave them on a truck for shelvers at the Hayden Access Desk when done.

-It is helpful to note the call # range that you weeded and/or note where you left off so the next person to work on it knows where to pick up form where you left off.  The note can be left on the truck with the books or given directly to Amy or Meghan (Amy is currently keeping track of this).

  • Open Aleph,  go to the Cataloging module, and click on the Items icon (2nd icon, highlighted in green below.)  The items tab is where you will scan the barcode on the book to bring up the appropriate record.

  • Once you retrieve the record (verify it is the correct title!), change the Temporary Location” from Browsery back to the permanent location of stacks.  Click the temporary location box to uncheck it  – see below

  • ·         If you find any oddities or something different (e.g. “missing” or “on search” status) please set the item aside and give to Amy or Meghan to review.

  • Once the Aleph part is finished, recycle the book cover or dust jacket, if there is one.
  • Place a small white blank sticker over the “Browsery” sticker on the book, since the book now is going to the stacks, rather than back to the Browsery.
  • When finished, please place book truck in Meghan and Amy’s cube and let them know or leave a note that you are finished.  (Ultimately the book truck will be brought down to the Hayden Service desk for the shelvers).
