Environment for Administrative Staff: Promotion

Promotion Plan

Beginning professional librarians or librarians with one or two years of experience are generally appointed to the Librarian I rank. After three years of experience as a professional librarian, a Librarian I may be considered for promotion to Librarian II. Department heads are expected to work with new librarians to write a developmental plan, which will guide librarians in their development toward promotion to Librarian II. When the promotion criteria are met, the department head recommends promotion, and on approval of the Director of Libraries and Steering Committee, promotion is awarded. A second career promotional step to Librarian III is possible after meeting appropriate criteria, which recognize the development of subject and/or functional expertise, demonstrated leadership abilities, and professional contributions.
