Respect for diversity is a fundamental value of MIT and the MIT Libraries, and is identified among the core values of our strategic plan. Diversity can be defined as all the ways that people are unique. There are many different types of diversity, and each is equally important in the development and success of our organization. Staff members who appreciate different backgrounds and perspectives provide us with a competitive advantage as we approach problem solving, creative thinking and successful collaboration. This appreciation also allows us to plan and deliver services to our increasingly diverse communities more effectively and with more sensitivity.
In an effort to strengthen our commitment to fostering a work environment where everyone feels valued and included, and to ensure that this commitment is reflected in our recruitment, development and retention programs, Library Council has created the Libraries’ Committee on the Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion.
"For helping create a collegial work environment and demonstrating respect and value for differences," the Libraries' Committee for the Promotion of Diversity & Inclusion was awarded a 2014 MIT Libraries Infinite Mile Award in the category of Community Buildling.
