Music quick guide: Jazz: Finding Books

Online and print resources

Introduction

Use this page to learn more about searching for books in physical and electronic formats in the library catalog. The box at the bottom of this page includes a small selection of books related to jazz music to jumpstart your search.

Searching for Books

Keyword searches in the library catalog are a great way to start. To filter your results only to display books, open the advanced search tab. Under Material Type, select Books. The Online box will result in e-books, and the Print/Physical Item box will yield physical books on our shelves.

Searching by subject heading to begin is a helpful tool.

Search generally with subject headings such as Jazz or Jazz Vocals. To search more specifically, use more detailed subject headings such as Jazz--history and criticism or African American Jazz Musicians. Once you have found materials that align with your topic of interest, looking at the subjects and topics listed in the catalog record to continue enhancing and refining your search.
