Using Images: Copyright & Fair Use: Identifying Images For Reuse

This guide will introduce the concept of "Fair Use', assist with finding open content for images on the web and touch on the concept of "fair use"

Three Options

Images posted openly on the web are not necessarily in the public domain.

To find reusable images:

  • Consider images created by the US government (.gov), which are generally, though not always, in the public domain

Looking for Terms of Use

To check special terms of use that apply:

  • Click on "Terms of Use," "Legal," copyright statement, or similar option (see example below)
  • Read captions and collection description
  • Remember that Fair Use still applies even if site says "all rights reserved."
