What are working papers?

Working papers are tools for the rapid dissemination of research results in the social sciences. Research results often first are published as working papers for informal feedback before later being published formally as journal articles.

Universities, research institutes, and other organizations publish hundreds of working paper series in economics, management, and other fields.  Many working paper series are available in full text online, while some (particularly older papers) may be available only in print.

Print working paper series at Dewey Library

Search Barton, the MIT Libraries' catalog, to find working paper series at Dewey:

  • Do a title keyword search: combine the name of the institution and the terms working paper.
  • MIT-published working papers also can be searched by author, title, or subject, series title and number.
  • Those available in electronic format can be downloaded directly from their catalog records in Barton.

This guide lists working paper series permanently retained by Dewey Library, listed alphabetically by institution (see M-Z holdings for series issued by MIT).

MIT working papers available only in print may be ordered for a fee through the MIT Libraries' Document Services order form.
