In the wake of the domestic abuse allegations against Johnny Depp, J.K. Rowling released a controversial statement regarding her supportive opinion and involvement about the actor's presence in her creative works. 

This has not only affected fans in the Harry Potter community, but also has been seen as a hypocritical move on Rowling's part. Many believe that since domestic abuse is a prevalent topic in The Casual Vacancy in particular, Rowling is acting conversely to her literary intents and minimizing the voices of women.

Revealing that she had been part of a discussion concerning recasting, many fans are upset that while Rowling has been a prominent voice in defense of women, she did not utilize a power seldom allowed to authors to remove an allegedly abusive actor from an adaptation of her work.
