Direct subscription to the New York Times

New York Times digital edition subscription is available to all MIT students, faculty, and staff.

Register for access

Create your account

1. Sign up for an account with your MIT email address and kerberos: MIT NYT pass registration

> If you are having trouble registering, clear the cache and cookies on your browser, and/or connect to MIT's VPN.

2. After registering, you can access the New York Times directly by going to nytimes.com or connecting via mobile app

Already a subscriber?

If you currently have a paid personal account with your MIT email address

Contact NYT, cancel personal account, and set up an MIT account. Cancellation will occur when current subscription expires. 

If you currently have a paid personal account with a non-MIT email address

- Set up an MIT account, and cancel your personal account if you wish.

NYT Cooking and Games subscribers

You cannot add these subscriptions to your free MIT account. They must be on a different email address (you do not need an additional digital newspaper subscription).

What's included?

Included in our subscription:

  • 1851 to current day and all updates
  • International, Spanish and Chinese editions
  • All NYT produced videos, blogs, newsletters, subscriber events
  • Teaching and learning tools with 16 discipline channels, curated articles, discussion questions, co-curricular activities
  • Access through web browser and personal devices/mobile app
  • The Athletic - To activate or renew your MIT gift subscription to The Athletic, go to the New York Times website and log into your MIT New York Times account using your mit.edu email address.
    • If you don't have an MIT New York Times account, see the New York Times guide to learn how to register.
    • Open the MIT Athletic activation link and authenticate using Touchstone if prompted.
    • ​​​​​​​You will arrive at a page that says “Redeem Gift Subscription.”
    • Click “Continue.”
    • Your one-year MIT gift subscription to The Athletic will now be part of your MIT New York Times account.
    • After activating, you can access The Athletic directly on The Athletic website.
    • You will need to renew your access once a year by repeating the activation process.

Not included:  

NYT Games, NYT Cooking, e-reader replica edition

Renewing MIT NYT Pass

  • Student subscriptions are valid through graduation date entered at sign up
  • Faculty/staff subscriptions are valid for four years. Renew access at accessnyt.com

To renew:

  1. Click on Already have an account? Log in here. Login with the same username and password that you registered with. If you have forgotten your password, click the Forgot password? link.
  2. You will see an on-screen confirmation that your pass has been reactivated, the new expiration date, and an option to add a calendar reminder for next year.
