The links below are to good sources of background information. That is, when you need to look up a quick biography on Shakespeare, a summary of the criticism of a play, or the history of a word, they're great sources to consult.
Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
Web version of the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd ed.) and the Additions Series. A good place to look up the history of a particular word.
Gale Literature Resource Center
Contains succinct summaries of the critical reception of Shakespeare's plays. Useful for getting an overview of how critics and scholars have interpreted the plays over the years.
Literature Online (LION)
Useful background information on Shakespeare and his work. Also allows you to search for scholarly literature on his work.
