Waste Disposal

Recycling

Single-Stream Recycling

Standard recycling in offices, conference rooms, work stations, and the kitchen is picked up by Facilities on weekday evenings. If you are in an office and lock it overnight, please leave your trash and recycling bins outside of your door; bins will not be emptied if they are left in a locked office.

  • Single-stream includes paper, metal, glass, and plastic (except any black plastic).
  • Do not put cutlery in the recycling bin. Cutlery cannot be recycled, as it can jam machinery in recycling facilities.
  • Do not put dirty items with food debris in the recycling bin. Empty and clean all food and beverage containers before placing them in recycling bins. Items with food debris are not recyclable and will contaminate a entire bin, causing it to be thrown away.
  • Shredded paper and/or sensitive information should not be recycled in the blue recycling bins. To dispose of confidential paper files use a shredding service (the Recycling Office does not provide shredding services).

Electronic Waste, etc.

  • Electronic waste includes toners from desktop printers, all batteries, and other e-waste. Facilities removes e-waste at no charge. To arrange a pack up, go to Service Requests in Atlas. Pick up normally takes 3 to 5 days, but may take longer during busier times of the year.
    • There is a basket for used batteries on the file cabinet by the printer in the Consultation Suite.
    • Please tape the terminals of any batteries! They are a fire hazard.

Trash

Trash bins in offices, conference rooms, work stations, and the kitchen is picked up by Facilities on weekday evenings. If you are in an office and lock it overnight, please leave your trash and trash bins outside of your door; bins will not be emptied if they are left in a locked office.

Please try to dispose of food trash in the kitchen or in the designated bin near the Café when possible.

Food Waste

There is a designated food waste bin near the Café on the 1st floor and in the Consultation Suite kitchen on the 2nd floor. Food scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds, and leaves from plants can be placed in this bin.

Compostable bowls, plates, cups, and cutlery can also go in, but please check that the item has "compostable" on it before putting it in the compost bin; if in doubt, put the item in the recycling bin or trash, as appropriate. Do not place any plastic or any tissues in the compost bin.
