Waste Disposal

Recycling

Single-Stream Recycling

Standard recycling in the kitchen, conference rooms, offices, and work stations is picked up by SBM on weekday evenings. If you are in an office and lock it overnight, please leave your trash and recycling bins outside of your door; bins will not be emptied if they are left in a locked office.

  • Single-stream includes paper, metal, glass, and plastic (except any black plastic).
  • Do not put cutlery in the recycling bin. Cutlery cannot be recycled, as it can jam machinery in recycling facilities.
  • Do not put dirty items with food debris in the recycling bin. Empty and clean all food and beverage containers before placing them in recycling bins. Items with food debris are not recyclable and will contaminate a entire bin, causing it to be thrown away.
  • For larger cardboard/paper items, please bring them to the A&A section, where we have larger, labeled bins under the processing table.

Recycling plastic bags, e-waste, etc.

Please contact lib-ne36-admins@mit.edu when a receptacle is nearing capacity so we can request a pickup.

  • Thin plastic film, such as grocery bags or the plastic wrap on serials, are NOT single-stream, but can be recycled. The current drop-off for these is in the Acquisitions section, by the processing table.
  • Bubble wrap can also be reused. The current drop-off is also in the Acquisitions section, in the plastic film bin.
  • E-Waste/TechnoCycle includes toners from desktop printers, all batteries, and other e-waste. The current drop off is in the bottom cabinets of the 6th floor mail station. Each is labeled.

Trash

Trash in the kitchen, conference rooms, offices, and work stations is picked up by SBM on weekday evenings. If you are in an office and lock it overnight, please leave your trash and recycling bins outside of your door; bins will not be emptied if they are left in a locked office.

Please try to dispose of food trash in the kitchen when possible.

Composting

Biogen and SBM have provided us with a composting bin in the NE36 6th floor kitchen. Food, coffee grounds, coffee filters, paper towels, and napkins can be placed in this bin. Compostable bowls, plates, cups, and cutlery can also go in, but please check that the item has "compostable" on it before putting it in the compost bin; if in doubt, put the item in the recycling bin or trash, as appropriate. Do not place any plastic or any tissues in the compost bin.
