Access to Our Office for the MIT Community

Libraries Staff Based in NE36

Libraries staff based in NE36 have badges, distributed by Biogen building management, to enter 105 Broadway during the hours that the lobby is not staffed (before 6AM and after 6PM on weekdays, all day on weekends or holidays). On the 6th floor these members of staff may use their MIT IDs for 24/7 access to our office suite by tapping their MIT IDs on the card pad next to any Libraries entrance.

Important information on Biogen Badge access:
  • Anyone moving to NE36 who needs a badge, new hires, temps, or others (ex: delivery services) must register for one using this email form. This form can also be used for individuals who have lost their Biogen issued building access badge.
  • Badge processing time varies but is often turned around in two business days.  Bike key turnaround is slower and can take several weeks to months depending on Biogen's vendor.
  • All Biogen badges must be tapped at the first floor badge readers (front door main entrance OR first floor elevator lobby) at least once a month in order to remain active. If your Biogen badge is inactive then it will not grant access to the building weekdays before 6am or after 6pm, on weekends, and on holidays. If you are unsure if your badge is properly activated tap it at one of the two first floor readers. If it flashes red/green it is active, if it flashes solid red it is inactive.
  • Biogen badges can be reactivated during regular business hours at the front desk by asking the security representative present and showing your MIT ID. You must have your MIT ID in order to do this.
  • If you lose your Biogen ID or bike cage key please immediately report the loss to the NE36 Administrative Assistants team via email only.

Libraries staff who have forgotten their MIT IDs may borrow temporary access cards. See below for more info on temporary access cards.

Libraries Staff Based in Other Locations

Libraries staff members not based in NE36 are able to tap their MIT IDs on the card pad next to any Libraries entrance on the 6th floor to unlock the door between 6AM and 6PM on weekdays.

Please note that the 6th floor bathrooms are outside of our office suite. Anyone with card pad access via a Libraries MIT ID will need to use their MIT ID to get back in.

Libraries staff who have forgotten their MIT IDs may borrow temporary access cards. See below for more info on temporary access cards.

Other Members of the MIT Community

All members of the MIT community may enter the building between 6AM and 6PM on weekdays by presenting their MIT ID to the security guard on the first floor. Non-Libraries members of the MIT community will need to be let into the office suite by either ringing one of our doorbells or using a cell phone to call the member of staff they are meeting. (You may also choose to meet your guest in the first floor lobby to escort them up.) Please note that you are responsible for meeting any guests that you may invite to meet in NE36 at the door, as we have no receptionist on either floor.

Please note that the 6th floor bathrooms are outside of our office suite. Non-Libraries members of the MIT community will need to either be let back into the office suite by a member of staff, or to borrow a temporary access card. Staff who have forgotten their IDs may also borrow temporary access cards. See below for more info on temporary access cards.

Non-MIT Visitors

All non-MIT visitors will need some form of photo ID to be signed in.

Please email lib-ne36-admins to alert the NE36 administrative team of any non-MIT visitors at least two business days in advance of their visit. Include the visitor's name and the expected date and time of their arrival. The Director's Office administrative team will arrange for building security to sign in your visitor(s) and direct them up to our office suite. The visitor will need to be let into the suite by either ringing one of our doorbells or using a cell phone to call the member of staff they are meeting. (You may also choose to meet your guest in the first floor lobby to escort them up.) Please note that you are responsible for meeting any guests that you may invite to meet in NE36 at the door, as we have no receptionist on either floor.

If a visitor will be going in and out of our office suite throughout the day, you may want to obtain a temporary access card to allow them to badge back into our suite. See below for more info on temporary access cards.

Spare Access Badges

Libraries staff who need to borrow an access badge should email lib-ne36-admins@mit.edu, or contact one of the NE36 admins. (Badges can be found in the key lockbox.)

Admins should log the signout and return of all access badges. The signout list for badges can be found here. If you are an admin who needs access, please email rhellen@mit.edu

We have a limited number of spare access badges for visitors to use while in NE36 (to move back and forth between the office suite and bathrooms). Staff may also borrow a badge for the day if they forget their MIT ID. Please note that since we have a limited number of badges, borrowing one is first-come, first-served. Badges should always be returned to NE36 admin staff before leaving for the day.
